Supastition - Chain Letters
After label problems regarding his debut ‘Seven Years Of Bad Luck’, despite critical acclaim from the few who heard it, Supastition disappeared from hip hop’s radar. With the recently released EP ‘The Deadline’ and his new album ‘Chain Letters’ he is back in the spotlight accompanied by a collection of talented beatmakers and emcees such as Little Brother, Jake One, Illmind, Nicolay and M-Phazes.
A versatile emcee, Supastition covers a lot of ground on this album, from effective storytelling with a moral on ‘A Baby Story’ and ‘Split Decisions’ to braggadocios battle rhymes aimed at his rivals on the aggressive Jake One produced ‘Hate My Face’. As a North Carolina based emcee he also manages to dispel the myth that all music from the South consists of seemingly mono syllabic rappers over cliched synth heavy beats on the track ‘That Ain’t Me’ where he demonstrates his lyrical skill over a suitably impressive Illmind production.
The only less than stellar tracks on here are the soulful yet lacklustre ‘Yesterday Everyday’ and ‘Ain’t Going Out’ but these are minor blips on an otherwise consistent and excellent album with plenty to warrant repeat listens.
