Ghostface Killah - Fishscale

Now on his 5th album, Ghostface remains one of Hip-Hop’s most consistent emcees and despite commercial success eluding him he’s been uncompromising with his music. The album starts off with a bang with ‘Shakey Dog’, a great narrative track about a heist gone wrong produced by the UK’s Lewis Parker.

This leads on to the catchy ‘Kilo’ featuring Raekwon, who after an absence features on 4 of the tracks including the excellent ‘R.A.G.U.’ where their chemistry is evident. Another of the album’s key figures is MF Doom, who supplies 4 beats, but dedicated fans may be disappointed by how the beats chosen have been used numerous times before. Luckily this doesn’t detract from the tracks as they still compliment Ghostface very well and led to ‘9 Milli Bros.’ where all 9 members of the Wu are reunited for one of the albums highlights.

It’s hard to imagine this selling huge amounts, with the only nod to radio play lists being ‘Back Like That’ featuring flavour of the month Ne-Yo, but with tracks as good as ‘The Champ’ and ‘Dogs Of War’ and backed with beats from the late Jay Dilla, Just Blaze, Pete Rock and more this will be of little concern to his fans. Only three months into 2006 it is clear that this will be hard to beat in any album of the year polls.
