DJ Fu Interview

“…the whole club was throwing cutlery, tables, chairs and fire extinguishers about. I got my money, went to the lift and while I was waiting a fight had spilled to where the lift was. The doors opened and they’re were 4 people in the lift who saw this fight going on and they all looked shocked to see a spaghetti western.”

So give us a little intro to yourself:

I’m a DJ /Student when I can be bothered.

Who or what has most influence on you and your music?

I think music-wise has to be a Tribe Called Quest. Midnight Marauders for me is the pinnacle of hip-hop. Dr.Octogan was also a big influence on my interest in hip-hop. The mad beats, sick scratching and fucked up lyrics from Kool Keith had me hooked. DJ-wise my first influence came from a local DJ called Cuban John. I saw him scratching and was well into it. Then I hooked up with Mud Fam’s DJ from a while back called Quick Fingers, he showed me how to mix and cut. I listened to a lot of mixtapes from Premiere, Craze, A-track and Shorty Blitz. Then I started watching a lot of DnB DJ’s like Andy C, Hype and Marky.

How did you get to where you are right now, is it 10 residencies or something stupid like that?

I gave a mixtape (seems so old-skool saying that now) to Unia from Hiphopalypse (former name for Blunted). I got a phone call 2 days later from Tyranny and said did I want to play at the Mystro gig. I accepted and became a resident. I warmed up for various acts at this night including Jehst, Tommy Evens, Buck 65, and Kashmere. Then Depth Charge hip-hop wing Vinyl Frontier booked me up for truck fest and I met Edd Lewington who started booking me for the hip-hop room at Kinetic. Tim from The Cellar made me a resident for their Friday hip-hop night called Sketchy. From playing down in The Cellar I met the Hit&Run boys who made me a hip-hop resident for their student nights. Then Beats ‘n’ Rhymes started up and I became a resident for them and helped run the night. Po Na Na had seen me play at some of the Blunted nights down there and I became a resident for Headflux. Edd Lewington split from Kinetic and started Solution where I started doing 4-deck hip-hop sets with Spurts (Tom Burton). So I have Edd to thank for this. Then some DnB nights started taking some interest in me, depth charge gave me a set at Truck Fest. I won the source DJ competition and after I played there I was offered a residency. Kinetic started booking me again but for DnB sets. Now I’m where I am so it all started from the Blunted boys so big up to all of them for bringing me through.

What’s your next project/gig?

My upcoming projects are more 4 deck hip-hop sets with Spurts, and I think were both going to work on a scratch track together. I’m going to do a hip hop mix for the Blunted website. Want to get on with doing some production and maybe doing some 3-deck DnB sets. Issue 2 of ‘The Scene’ magazine as well.

If there was anything you could change about the state of hip-hop (UK in particular) what it be and why?

I think we need more people get involved in the scene instead. What’s the best event/night story you can give us? Got to be Task Force at Hiphopalypse it was off the hook. The coffin stage was incredible it felt like you were all huddled around Task Force MCing on the street. Don’t think many hip-hop nights could touch that atmosphere.

I remember you telling me the story about playing at one girl’s 18th birthday where a fight broke out. Can you tell us a bit more about that night, it sounds legendary…

Yeah my mate said he’d hooked me up a gig (in London). So I went down to find a conference room in a hotel, with not that many people there. I think the girl got ripped off ‘cos they told her that if she wanted more people she would have to hire another room. The limit for the room she had was apparently 150 people but the room was bigger than The Zodiac. Everyone felt lost and uncomfortable in the big empty space. I got off the decks to see some one smash another boy in the face and 2 of his teeth scatter across the floor. Before you could say Hiphopalypse ten boys were fighting. A chair got thrown across the room and knocked a boy to the floor and when he was on the floor I saw him get stabbed in the cheek with a fork. I thought, “Fuck this I want to go home and get paid”. The girl whose party it was, was crying her eyes out and I had to ask her for my money while the fight was still happening. She paid me while the whole club was throwing cutlery, tables, chairs and fire extinguishers about. I got my money, went to the lift and while I was waiting a fight had spilled to where the lift was. The doors opened and they’re were 4 people in the lift who saw this fight going on and they all looked shocked to see a spaghetti western. Someone punched another boy into the lift full of people and then through a bottle at him. At this point I wanted to get the fuck out so I went down the fire exit…
