Ben One - One talented man
So Ben One, where do I start? He’s been in the game for a long time, since ’95. He’s made some dope tunes, worked with good people, pushed the scene and one of those cats that will get the wider recognition he deserves soon, no doubt.
He’s a hard worker, constantly grafting on different projects, be it with Creative Control Records (established in 99) or playing out, or just tucked away in his studio down Wiltshire way. In his time, he’s worked with the best of ‘em – Organix, Banxy, Cello, Para, Tommy Evans and the Numbskullz, I could go on. If you haven’t already (shame on you!), check for titles, Future EP, Paradyme EP, Communication EP (copped this a few years back, still fresh as fuck – Tyranny), Left Country LP and numerous mixtapes in the B1 backcat…. The guy just doesn’t know how to sit still! With his original beats plus the added expertise of the aforementioned artists, all his releases are gems. Anyways, don’t just take my word for it; here are some of the good things that other people have said: Paradyme EP - “stands out a mile in dj sets with crisp instrumentalism and power house crunchy breaks, it seems this label should go from strength to strength.” Knowledge magazine on the Creative Control label and sound, that some praise. Communication EP - “two vocals do credit to this mastery of music on the thickest piece of UK vinyl to grace our 1210s” Hip Hop Connection magazine and “like an abnormally large dartboard this is unmissable!” Knowledge magazine again showing they know something good when they hear it. There are even more positive things that people have said on his Myspace page but you’re just gonna have to see for yourselves!
At the moment he is also writing music for the Runaround Revue (live Funk band), singing and playing guitar for the Super Lumines (he really should take time to relax!), and have just started a new label with Type called Root Elevation Recordings. Their first 12” has just been cut, it’s a soul record by Type and JB and features a remix from the man like Ben One and the best part is, it’s being distributed by Soul Trader, so you can make a little bit of effort and go and cop yourselves a copy, or in other words “GO AND BUY IT!” In short, if you haven’t heard of him, get to know. This producer/dj and all-round maker of good music is worth finding out about. To those of you that do know Ben One, be proud of yourself, I’m sure if your ears could speak they’d thank you too. Keep checking his stuff.
