Dr Freud Interview
Hello, my name’s Christopher Manderson, otherwise known as Doctor Freud, Doc Freud, Doc Frizzle/Freezy, Freud, Freudian, Freudula, Alan Cartridge or That Emo Looking Rapper That Isn’t Ineffable! (Love you Neff!) I’m 18 years old and have been rhyming for approximately 4 years.
Haha, your hair will never be as good! So what’s the story behind the name, Dr Freud?
Haha, so many people ask me this… so here goes! Basically, I was looking for a name, something that is relevant to me and relevant to Hip Hop. So, I set about looking in various things, from the dictionary, thesaurus, newspapers, everything really until I clicked on a document about the psycho-analyst Sigmund Freud. Now this guy was weird, but he had some interesting theories - especially all the sex and aggression related ones. But the theory that really struck a chord for me was the one that went something along the lines that whatever an individual says, it has a deeper subconscious meaning and I thought this was quite true of myself. I feel that my lyrics have more to give than first meets the ear, that deep down there’s more than just a hint of myself conveyed in those words…so I adopted the name, Doctor Freud and went about shouting it about!
Some deep thinking, I like it. “Its not where you from it’s…” well it is where you’re from in this case, spill the beans…
Well, I was born in lovely bonnie Scotland but now reside in the quaint little village of Hook Norton nestled deep in the Cotswolds…haha, sounds like a country life advert or something! On the real, my housing situation is a bit weird due to me being in school in High Wycombe where I board from Mondays to Fridays. Then at the weekends I go back to Hook Norton, or to be more accurate, back to Banbury where I spend most of my weekends at my girlfriends. My situation is soon to be even more confusing when my parents move out to South Africa, so I will no longer be living in Hook Norton, so will spend the majority of my time in Banbury. So if anyone wants to contact me, it’s probably best to ring me or email me to find out where I am!
Hook Norton, home of some infamous alcohol beverages. So how did you hear about Blunted?
It was through Pinikal. Basically I was bumming about on a few of the other UK forums, and got chatting to sweet Matthew and he introduced me to the site. First of all I was a very rare visitor to the site but as I read more I slowly became addicted and its normally one of the first pages up on my computer screen along with the customary myspace page!
Haha, yeah Blunteds funny like that! Are there any major influences on your music?
My main influences are my past and present. My past has a massive input on my music, because I’ve been through some tough stuff, and of course some good times. The main factors of my past are not seeing my dad since I was 7 and losing both an ex-girlfriend and a good friend in relatively quick succession a couple of years ago. I went through a period of making tunes that reflected all this, I call these the ‘Dark Days’! My present is what I like to rhyme about mostly, using topics that are relevant to me now, e.g. my girlfriend, the crew, my fam and the current state of the world. My other influences are all the artists I work with and meet, without them I wouldn’t be where I am now, so muchos props has to go out to them.
That defiantly shows through your music. Heard allot about your crew, what’s the score with them?
Ahh the crew, well the crew I am in is called Riskie Business and we formed on 12th August ‘06. It comprises of 3 rappers; Provokal - Aussie born 20 year old residing in Banbury, currently working on many projects with many people, the man’s a workhorse! He’s the cogs of the crew, the sound engineer, networker, dope MC and most of all, a quality bloke. Then there’s Tha Fuz - this boy is sick beyond comprehension! 16 years old from Banbury, he is probably one of the most technically blessed rappers I’ve ever worked with, in fact, I’ve ever heard. The multies this guy comes with are heavy, believe! He’s also a sick beatmaker but remains humble and modest about that part of his hip hop make up! And finally there’s me, Freud - 18 years old, has no other skills except rhyming and being the pretty face of the crew…haha jokes!
Haha, of course, it’s a good look though. So how would you describe your sound, if it can be described at all?
Well, our sound is so versatile that it can’t be classed. We hate to be classed or grouped, you know? We make music, we are music artists, not just UK Hip Hop artists etc. We make music that we hope appeals to everyone, we got the ability to make all sorts of tunes; big bangers that you can play in the club, gritty street tunes, deep and meaningful tunes… we just make music we like to hear and feel the majority of people like to hear. Its no good just making one sort of sound ‘cos that’s repetitive, we switch up to keep the listener ever guessing!
Sounds like a recipe for success! Where can we go hear more of your music?
You can hear us more when the crew finish working on our debut E.P - Making Business, which has no release date as yet as we have to make and then decide on the dope tunes to put on it! Will be a heavy release if i say so myself! Personally, I’m working on my mixtape/E.P - The Freudian Script, with features from Suicyde, Joe Gutta, the Riskie boys of course and many more. Production from heads such as Tactick, Shears, Berserk to name a few. Will be ready sometime soon, but yet again, I have no release date. Provokal is working on a CD with local R’n'B sensation Sean Rumsay and is starting an album in December/January with Imz from Broken Souls Records, so look out for them. Tha Fuz hasn’t got anything in the works at the moment as he’s concentrating on the Riskie movement so we got the whole of focus on the project, its going to be massive!
You can also hear me and the crew on the good old t’internet… www.myspace.com/itsdoctorfreud, www.myspace.com/riskiebusiness , www.myspace.com/provokal , www.myspace.com/itsthafuz - so drop on there, add us, listen to our tunes and drop a comment.
And how could I forget, you can hear us on the wonderful, sublime and delightful creation from Blunted Presents - Local Music For Local Heads Volume 2, available soon!
Haha, yes indeed available soon, worth the wait I can assure everyone! That brings us on nicely to my next question… What’s the story behind the Blunted track?
Haha, good question, that’s quite a long story. Back in the day, me and Pinikal created a crew (which for some reason died quite quickly), and Mr Shears, like the lovely guy he is, sent us a few beats to use. Unfortunately we didn’t get round to using any of them and they were left to gather dust on my iTunes. When the news came about the second volume of Blunted’s ‘Local Music For Local Heads’, the newly formed Riskie Business realised we had to submit a tune as it wasn’t an opportunity to be missed. So I went rummaging about my beat folder on iTunes, and threw a few at Pro and Fuz, and in the end we settled on the beat Shears had given me! So, we wrote our verses, recorded and mixed it down in quick succession and finished by naming it ‘Introducing…‘ as we’re basically introducing ourselves to the scene with a bang! It has resulted in a tune that we are very much proud of, and hope it is enjoyed by all those that hear it! (Plus, the beat is dope, even if Shears says it isn’t, he’s a liar!)
I can vouch for that, the tune is really, really good. So what does the future hold for Freud music-wise?
Well, who knows? Hopefully we’ll see the Riskie Business E.P reach all across the globe, and see it getting a good reception. Also, I’d love to get my solo stuff out there more and hope the masses are feeling it! I definitely want to be doing more shows, its what I thrive on, and the chemistry on stage with the Riskie guys is awesome so we definitely looking to hit up more places. So if promoters reading this! BOOK US! We are quite cheap and give a good show… much like a cheap whore, but better! Finally, I want you people out there to be hearing about me more, like on the radio or on T.V. So, keep your eyes peeled!
So you heard it, book this guy! Ok now onto the standard interview shouts question. Holla!
Well, big props to the Blunted Fam, Gabs & Roscoe, my Riskie Bizzle boys, Pro & Fuz, my lovely girlfriend Mary, GTA, Suicyde, Zaheer and all the UKHHF famalam, all my beat makers out there - Shears, Buttermeltz, Berserk, Tactick, Digital Movement, my best mates from home - Nick, Belch, Kier & Luke, and last of all, a big shout out and props to the peeps who believe in me and my vision, Bless you all! (Sorry if I’ve missed your name but everyone I know deserves major props)
I just heard too that your Jon’s (Dutch) new favourite rapper! Any last words…
Get listening peeps, I make the music for you so, support the cause! Peace out!
Peace mate
