Indecision Interview:
So you finally got round to a BITS! Mix - what can we expect?
A few personal favourites from the past and from the last few months. Bit of hiphop, bit of soul, bit of latin a few randoms in there too like Creedence, haha. It’s a lot of stuff that if I had the choice I’d play in a set without fear of reprisal from a dancefloor…
You’re not worried about what people think are you?
A lot of the time yes, not about me… just the music.
But as the DJ, you are the music no?
In a sense, but I don’t want to be all ‘YOU WILL DANCE TO MY RECORDS’ like some people do, I won’t play something just for me, but at the same time I wouldn’t play something just because someone wants to hear it. It’s good just to feel the flavour of who you’ve got in front of you and feed off them, and maybe tease something in just to test them I suppose. I guess that’s why I try and keep a wide variety of music around me.
What tunes are your personal favourites on the mix?
Oh that’s easy….Charmaine Brunette ‘Am I the Same Girl?’ and Ellen Mcillwaine ‘Jimmy Jean’
Is there something you want to tell us??
The Charmaine Brunette track is a cover of a Barbara Acklin track I had for ages in my box but never realised, Aidan Skylarkin’ pointed it out to me and I fell in love with it. Then I heard this slightly more soulful version from the 80’s and its just incredible. It’s always a set ender now.
You have ‘Get up, get on it’ by James Brown on there. I know you are a big JB fan - do you miss him?
Of course I do… but you know, he didn’t do anything to directly influence me towards the end of his life, but he changed SO much, popular music today would be completely different. The Beatles, Elvis, Buddy Holly the list goes on - none of them did anything like what James did to music. And not just music, the guy changed black politics in the US and probably the world with one song. I don’t think there’s anyone who could lay claim to changing the world in the way he did. And the concept was so simple.
I guess his presence as a human being will be missed, and I don’t think there will ever be anyone like him again. But ‘Get Up’ just is everything the man was about - getting up, doing something that means something, not necessarily to others, but so long as it means something to you, that’s what counts. I’ve got mad love for the guy.
Fair play, so now summarise your mix in 4 words…
Party in your pants.
Lastly what does Blunted mean to you?
My introduction to like minded people for the 1st time.
And finally, shout outs fella?
Yeah loads - Blunted Presents, the whole ASM/Third Culture crew, Headcount crew, Breakin Bread crew, Skylarkin’ crew in all its forms and Denizen Boogie.
