Doll & The Kicks @ The Providence, 29/11/08
I had no real intention of going out last Saturday night. I was going to be a pussy, switch my phone off and watch Match of The Day instead. However, as is so often the case, it came round to the afternoon and I started feeling frisky. I knew End Of level Baddie had a gig at The Providence at the top of my road. It had been a little while since I’d seen them and also had some mates that I thought would like them too. I made a couple of calls, had a couple of spliffs and a few cans of beer before trekking up the way to check out the gig.
The Providence isn’t somewhere you choose to go for a quiet drink. It’s got a distinctly Wetherspoons feel about it to be honest. Thats the downside. The upside is the sound system in there is absolutely crisp and they have some amazing band nights there, courtesy of Lout Promotions.
On entering the building we paid our £2 entry (a f*cking steal in hindsight) and noticed on the board that headlining the night were a band called Doll and The Kicks. Now, I’m not massively up on Brighton’s indie scene but my mates seemed quite excited by the prospect. Apparently the lead singer is really hot and they do a wicked dub/ska/punk tune which is amazing.
By the time EOLB came on I was in a slightly merrier mood. Their live sets just keep getting better although I was slightly disappointed not to hear Creeps On The Beach.
Then out came the headling band. Dude with a huge afro and a buttoned up chequered shirt on guitar caught my attention…until Doll took to the stage. From the moment she started singing she absolutely owned the stage. To say she has a distinctive voice is an understatement, reminded me a little of Deborah Harrie. They opened with ‘If You Care’ . The track of the set for me was their forthcoming single ‘Roll Up The Red Carpet’ which is being released on the 29th January 2009.
Wicked night.
