DJ IQ - Pimp My Mix

The offer was too good to pass up. I logged into Facebook only to see IQ literally pimping out his latest mix, aptly titled ‘Pimp My Mix’. Although he’s still relatively young, IQ has been on the scene for a good few years now. Since winning the UK under 18 DMC Championships in 2002/2003, IQ has gone on to play venues such as Fabric, The Jazz Cafe and Ministry Of Sound.

DJ IQ

Here’s what IQ had to say on his mix -

Probably the best mix I’ve done to date. Dedicated to all the pimps, hustlers and ice cold players. This mix literally made me feel like i was a pimp in 70’s black America, I know I’m not, but it’s a fucking good mix. Enjoy.

H.O.P.E. - Love, Lotus (prod. Flying Lotus)

hope 457x303 H.O.P.E. Love, Lotus (prod. Flying Lotus)

Big props to Sound Vertie for the link up. The track features H.O.P.E, an upcoming West Coast rapper with flylo on production duties. The track is released as a homepage to late late J Dilla to coincide with his birthday.

There is also a great little promo animation produced by Sipho Mabona. No idea if this is an official calibration or whatever, but its a great concept.

DJ Teddy King, Nas - Surviving The Times Mixtape

DJ Teddy King, NAS - Surviving The Times Mixtape

A digital release of a 2-disc-tape containing vintage and super rare NAS cuts! The original mixtape was released originally through Boundless music. This was never supposed to be released digitally until DJ Teddy King hooked up with GetRightMusic. So big thanks to GetRight for the hook up there.

January Dubstep Mix 2009 - DJ Merkin

Here’s a cracking Dubstep mix from the man better known for bringing us his quality Smoke On The Hills mixtapes. Under the alias DJ Merkin, this mix provides a real quality slice of dubstep from the last year as well as some other quality bits blended in. As with all our mixes, please feel free to comment below.

DJ Merkin

Here’s what Merkin had to say of his mix -

Basically, this is a mix of (in my opinion) some of the best tunes at around 140bpm from the latter half of 2008, plus a few older cuts chucked in for good measure. Hopefully it shows how diverse the scene known as ‘Dubstep’ is at the minute…loads of different flavours - straight forward dub, techno, garage, grime and a lickle funky. Plus its an international affair which starts in South London before representing producers from California, Sweden, Netherlands & Romania. Best served loudly through a Sub!

Michna/SV4, Seeing Colors: Ghostly Influences

Michna/SV4, Seeing Colors: Ghostly Influences

“Seeing Colors: Ghostly Influences,” Mixed by Michna and curated by SV4, is a wicked little mix that features 60 minutes of ambient and melancholic dance and electro music with remixes and originals from artists such as Orbital, Joey Beltram, The Persuader, Pantha Du Prince, Kraftwerk, Air, I-F, Depeche Mode, The Smiths and The Cure. This is a real treat and has been on repeat for me much of the last few days whilst at work. Scroll down for the free download link making sure you check out the blurb below for more details on Michna and SV4, plus info on the tracks and how the mix came about.

From self-titled Magazine:

It all started with a record sleeve, a minimal blend of Michael Segal’s Boy Cat Bird characters and a Pacman-like logo plastered across a stark black background. Weighing the potential purchase based on nothing but a record shop recommendation and the cover’s simple, striking design, we scooped up Ghostly International’s inaugural Idol Tryouts compilation despite not even knowing who Dabrye or Matthew Dear were.

With Ghostly’s 10th anniversary looming on the horizon this year and School of Seven Bells just weeks away from gracing the cover of self-titled’s third digital issue, we thought we’d ask one of the label’s most promising new signings (Michna, a beat conductor/DJ/former Secret Frequency Crew member who also goes by the name Egg Foo Young) to craft a mix of Ghostly’s scene-spanning influences. He’s joined by Ghostly founder Sam Valenti IV (a.k.a. SV4), a sometime DJ who helped curate Michna’s crate. Together the pair emerged with a heady 60 minutes of melancholic dance music (Pantha Du Prince, Sascha Funke), Italodisco (Giorgio Moroder), essential electro (Kraftwerk), and an ambient house anthem (Orbital’s “Halcyon & On & On”) that left self-titled scrambling for our old copy of The Brown Album. Indie kids are encouraged to uncross their arms and join the fray, as the set ends in a mascara-smeared trifecta of the Depeche Mode, the Smiths and the Cure. Read More….
