A new BITS! with some fresh new artwork, BITS! Vol.17 sees another DSM cohort Ben E take the wheels. Ben E is also the 13th DJ to feature from Oxford.

A little note for iPod touch or iPhone owners. If you tap the album artwork during playback you’ll get the track list.

Ben E Interview

Right, so give the good people of Blunted a little introduction to yourself

I’m Chris Benfield, I’m from Carterton which is on the outskirts of Oxford. The reason I am called ‘Ben E’ is that my close mates used to call me ‘benny’ because of my second name…

So, you’re now making serious moves in DnB. How did you first get involved in the scene?

Basically I went down to the Hit&Run open decks about 2-3 years ago now. I didn’t know anyone at all except for Fu through Myspace, from that I managed to get a set at Hit&Run and just generally got to know more people who were involved in the Oxford scene through attending nights.

What can we expect and how would you describe your BITS! Mix?

I would describe the mix as a mixture of rolling beats with each tune offering something different, covering certain aspects of D&B that I personally love the most. I like to keep things simple on the mixing side of things letting the tunes do the talking but also keeping it tight and flowing throughout.

Well it certainly seems to be paying off! I’m listening to your BITS! mix at the moment, what’s the tune that drops 10 mins into your mix?

Commix – Scarlet, such a big tune!

Certainly caught my attention! Your doing some work with the DSM label - can you tell us a bit more about that link up?

I can’t remember how I met Stumasta, again I think it was just through networking on Myspace and attending nights in Oxford. It was around the time I started writing beats and I used to just send him everything I did. He would just dark me by saying something along the lines of ‘that beat is shit’. But it was exactly the advice I needed, as weird as that sounds.

Haha, the legend that is Stumasta. So it seems like a combination of networking and hard work is paying off. I was just trying to think how we got introduced, how did you come to learn about Blunted?

Think it was that time when FeelTheBass what shut down for a couple of days…

Lucky coincidence then! So if peeps are feeling this BITS! mix and want to hear more of you, where can they go and what can they do?

I have a Myspace page which you can hit me up on - www.myspace.com/benedj. It also has a few of my tunes on there which aren’t on the mix if you’d like to check out more of my stuff. I have two tunes signed, one is to DSM and the other to Industry Recordings. The Industry bit is due out around August/September time and the DSM one around October.

Nice - you playing out anytime soon?

Catch me and Stumasta back 2 back at Fresh’n'Funky on 6th of June @ Thirst Lodge, Oxford…

Favourite meal?

At the minute its probably my ol’ dears homemade chicken kebabs, baaad!

If you won the lottery what would you spend your winnings on?

Starting a D&B night in Oxford probably.

If you could meet any musician dead or alive, who would it be?

Probabaly J Dilla just so I could steal his samples/production skills.

Lastly squire, you got any shout outs?

Yeah just shout out to everyone in Oxford involved in the scene, really appreciate the support I’ve had from DJs, and everyone in general. Really got to big up Jordan Infectious as well for helping me a lot with production!! Oh yeah nearly forgot… Big up Blunted!

Indecision Interview:

So you finally got round to a BITS! Mix - what can we expect?

A few personal favourites from the past and from the last few months. Bit of hiphop, bit of soul, bit of latin a few randoms in there too like Creedence, haha. It’s a lot of stuff that if I had the choice I’d play in a set without fear of reprisal from a dancefloor…

You’re not worried about what people think are you?

A lot of the time yes, not about me… just the music.

But as the DJ, you are the music no?

In a sense, but I don’t want to be all ‘YOU WILL DANCE TO MY RECORDS’ like some people do, I won’t play something just for me, but at the same time I wouldn’t play something just because someone wants to hear it. It’s good just to feel the flavour of who you’ve got in front of you and feed off them, and maybe tease something in just to test them I suppose. I guess that’s why I try and keep a wide variety of music around me.

What tunes are your personal favourites on the mix?

Oh that’s easy….Charmaine Brunette ‘Am I the Same Girl?’ and Ellen Mcillwaine ‘Jimmy Jean’

Is there something you want to tell us??

The Charmaine Brunette track is a cover of a Barbara Acklin track I had for ages in my box but never realised, Aidan Skylarkin’ pointed it out to me and I fell in love with it. Then I heard this slightly more soulful version from the 80’s and its just incredible. It’s always a set ender now.

You have ‘Get up, get on it’ by James Brown on there. I know you are a big JB fan - do you miss him?

Of course I do… but you know, he didn’t do anything to directly influence me towards the end of his life, but he changed SO much, popular music today would be completely different. The Beatles, Elvis, Buddy Holly the list goes on - none of them did anything like what James did to music. And not just music, the guy changed black politics in the US and probably the world with one song. I don’t think there’s anyone who could lay claim to changing the world in the way he did. And the concept was so simple.

I guess his presence as a human being will be missed, and I don’t think there will ever be anyone like him again. But ‘Get Up’ just is everything the man was about - getting up, doing something that means something, not necessarily to others, but so long as it means something to you, that’s what counts. I’ve got mad love for the guy.

Fair play, so now summarise your mix in 4 words…

Party in your pants.

Lastly what does Blunted mean to you?

My introduction to like minded people for the 1st time.

And finally, shout outs fella?

Yeah loads - Blunted Presents, the whole ASM/Third Culture crew, Headcount crew, Breakin Bread crew, Skylarkin’ crew in all its forms and Denizen Boogie.

Reeplay BITS! Interview:

Why did you want to do a BITS mix?

I heard everyone else’s, all of them sick, they all seem to be peoples personal tastes which I like, shows something about them as a person if you know what I mean. So, I wanted to do one, to show people where I’m comin’ from.

Ok cool - so describe your mix, what can people expect?

Well its mostly soul music, and by that I mean music for the soul, sounds a bit cliché but that’s the best way to describe it. As for specifics, golden era Hip Hop from the modern day, old/new funk, and a ‘lil bit of Jazz.

Are there any particular tracks that stand out for or have particular relevance to you?

Yeah definitely they all do, more then others. 60% of the tunes you hear are from people in the Civil Mics family or affiliated with them, others are tasters from people I talk to from across the globe who have kindly let me show real music is still around.

Aside from Civil Mics, have you got any other associates in on this?

Yeah there’s this ASM joint, well not totally ASM as its produced by Scott but features Green and FP. There’s also a track me and Melodiq have done for our album, theres a joint by Pat D and Lady Paradox on there, my man Mentalist let me sneak a joint on from his free mixtape. There’s a joint from this dope producer from Swindon I speak to & know as Forty Immortal, he did a remix for some joints on Rawkus Records and got chosen. I cant forget Presto and Blacc plague (Writes Of passage).

You got some good collabo’s on the go definitely! Last year you released ‘Come With Me’ - what’s the feedback on it?

Yeah good, I sent it to a couple local labels, they said it was the best stuff they have heard for a while. I sent it 2 Mark B, he said the beats were dope but the lyrical content was a bit too slow moving for him. The feedback I have got from people is very positive, I even met a Reeplay groupie the other day - she said “I loved you, and listen to your album everyday” - I felt dappah.

Haha, nice work. So how many units did you mange to shift?

Umm… cough cough. Lets just say I’m on my way to getting my platinum tooth.

I’m just intrigued what with the release of LMFLH Vol.2. What barriers did you come up against? Why do you think it didn’t shift more?

I don’t think enough people have heard it (LMFLH), I feel I rushed my beat (Proper Dosage) a little, I just really wanted a joint on there, and I know my man ‘Evo’ was dead keen to hook up with me.

Would you be interested re-releasing ‘Come With Me’ as a digital release free for download?

Yeaaah, I wanna get that shit heard get hype for my new album.

New album eh? Give us some details!

I’m not gonna say a date or anything cos its still a concept, although I do have a couple finished songs already. Its gonna be doper / shorter & clearer. Not a tiny EP but a reasonable sized plate, unlike that all you can eat buffet ‘Come With Me‘!

Title? Collabs?

Don’t have a title yet, collaborated with many people from CMM (Civil Mics Movement), hopefully more cats from the boogie down Ox, maybe some established people, but I cant say any names yet.

What format will the release be?

It’s gonna be available on CD/Vinyl/Digital - I’m hoping to get some help from A Bridge Too Far Records.

Nice, Pat D certainly has his head screwed on - a good man to know.

Mos definitely, the world will see a lot more from that one.

Right cool - you’ve whetted peoples appetite with this BITS! mix which is dope - where can people hear you’re other stuff?

If your an artist looking for a beat then check myspace - www.myspace.com/reeplay and there will always be info about what I’m doing/plan to do on that page just below the tracks.

You ever considered virb.com?

Nah – but I’m gonna sign up now, haha.

Do you ever play out, or want to?

Yeah I wanna keep playin’ until people have no energy and collapse, haha.

So when you next playing out?

Yeah well hopefully I’m going to organise some bits and bobs here in Southampton. MC Presto should be coming in the summer and we are going to try and do a show, since we’ve got like 30 tracks together and never got round to slappin’ out an album concept.

Nice one – you have any shout outs?

Yes yes - thank you for everybody who let me use there music on the Mix, shouts to K-Nite and Mentalist, Loose Threads family. Shouts to Pat D, Lady P, ASM, Fade, Green T and FP. Shouts to Teef, Seun, Connexion, all of CMM, Fortyi, W.O.P, Melodiq and everyone else for listenin’

Finally - what does Blunted presents mean to you?

Family, good times, good music, good nights, and good atmosphere.

Blunted Presents - BITS! Vol.13 ft. Tom Caruana

After years of making music in his parents basement Tom Caruana’s first release was on Breakin’ Bread’s ‘Deadly 7″ Sins’, that was followed up with an EP ‘The Splice Of Life’. Albums featuring Tom’s production include: Wordsmith’s ‘Road Mans Showcase’, Menagerie’s ‘Wild Kingdom’, Genesis Elijah’s ‘Deh Pon Road’ and Dr Syntax’s ‘Off The Radar’.

In 2007 Tom started his own label (Tea Sea Records) releasing a handful of albums including Tom Caruana ‘Bric A Brac’, ‘Boiler Room Collective’ mixtape & album, ‘Bombadeal’ (the Green Man) ‘Songs From The Wood’ and an instrumentals CD featuring beats from various releases. Coming soon on Tea Sea Records: Dutch Courage & Tom Caruana Album! If that hasn’t convinced you to download this volume in our BITS! series I don’t know what will.

Tracklist: None!

The mix is titled “Broadcast: Message In Space” and is all Tom Caruana’s work.

BITS! Interview

Full Name: Thomas James Caruana

Name of record label:

Tea Sea Records

You’ve been putting quality releases out for some time. Which release are you proudest of?

It’s either ‘Splice Of Life’ or ‘Bric A Brac’. Breakin Bread go to town with all their releases and they got it (’Splice Of Life’) out there properly, I respect them for that one. ‘Bric A Brac’ has been in progress for about 5 years so its more relief that pride.

Where do you get inspiration from?

My dad inspired me to make music in the first place. But hearing anything that triggers a reaction has an effect on my musical creations.

How would you describe your “style”?

Changing every day (the pretentious answer) or, home made hip hop with a twist of humour (the more humble answer).

I’m looking forward to your album with Dutch Courage. What can we expect?

Mostly instrumental tracks. It’s produced by both of us, some individually some together. There’s lots of live instruments on there and we got The Shofar Horns on 3 tracks.

Quite a few of your releases have been collaborations. Who would you, in an ideal world, like to collaborate with?

MF DOOM!!! I recently did a track with Insight which opened the door into that ideal world a little.

You are a man of many skills – djing, producing and playing instruments. What’s your forte? What do you prefer doing?

I like all of it, I’d hate to do just one thing. But if I had to choose it would be being left in a room with loads of instruments and someone there to record me, sometimes recording yourself is a little tedious. But I do enjoy producing other peoples songs as well.

I’ve heard a listen to your BITS mix – its quality. It reminded me of one of Sloth’s albums “The Unfathomable Adventures of the Alien Resistance Movement”. If you look past its extremely long name, it’s a conceptual album using a lot of cut n paste spoken word. Your mix has some similarities –

I’d like to hear it. I’m into concept albums, I’m working on one called ‘Bombadeal’ and the ‘Green Men Of the Mythical Forest’ .

So, people if your reading this, download Tom’s BITS! mix and get informed. Where can people who are hungry to hear more go to?

The website is www.teasearecords.com. There are albums available to buy on CD and some free download EP’s and podcasts there. The myspace is www.myspace.com/tomcaruana.

The important questions. Favourite TV show:

Not a fan of much on TV but Hero’s is something I quite like.

Favourite meal:

Roast dinner got to be the winner! A chicken / gammon combo is good with crispy potatoes, loads of other veg, gravy and bread sauce!

Least favourite person:

Someone like Robert Maxwell there’s a few.

If you were stuck on a desert Island with 1 person who would it be and why?

Someone who’s good at survival (Ray Mears) cos I’d be useless.

Lastly give some shout outs mate –

Dutch, Bobby, Robin Walden, Nick Maxwell, Elemental, Dr Syntax, Rizzle, Sri Mckinnon, Alistair (Son Records), Tyni, Leane, HP, Evil Sun, Ido, anyone who’s bought, enjoyed or helped with my music.
