Five Missions More Live! ft Speech Debelle

Five Missions More have been hustling away quietly for some time now. Primarily a music publishing company they also do a damn good sideline in live shows. The upcoming show sees 2 tremendous talents take to the stage in the form of Andreya Triana and Speech Debelle amongst others.

Heres what The Guardian had to say about the latter performer - “An artist with sufficient confidence in her own greatness to exude a take-it-or-leave-it charm… startlingly good”

The nights strength lies in the commitment of all those involved with it. They at 5MM are not content with sitting back and focus on the music publishing 9-5 styles. Instead they have taken it upon themselves to showcase the cream of today’s up and coming musical talent. As with each 5MM Live! night, both Simpson and TM Juke can be found spinning some biggest tunes popping off. Both heavily involved in the London and Brighton music scenes, their sets are always guaranteed crowd-pleasers.

Off the back of our recent February show (our busiest and most successful to date) Five Missions More Live! is back with a bang! Our April line up is scarily exciting! Our palms sweated and our collective appetites whetted, 5MM is proud to present an evening of remarkable live music focusing on some really rather splendid young female artists. We’re as sure as sure can be that both Andreya Triana and Speech Debelle are destined for greatness in 2009, its simply a matter of time….

If you’re in the area, make sure you swing by, I doubt you will be disappointed. With live arts, give aways and more in store, you may find yourself trying to force more money into the palms of whoever is working the door than the paltry £1 fee they require…

War Poets of Now - Corespondents in Conflict

Hi Blunted! It’s been a while since I blogged but I am getting back on it, I wanted to share with you this post from our blog over at Community League:

Rappers have often met media criticism of the violence in their rhymes with the idea that they are reflections of their environment, they hold a mirror to their surroundings and show what the mainstream media won’t - the “real CNN” if you will.

Tupac said he talked about where he lived to try and make a change, he described the ghetto because he thought that if he made enough noise then some one would have to do something about it. Whether that still holds true today is not an argument I want to get “blogged down in” in this particular post however.

I want to draw your attention to an Exhibition in London next month called War Poets of Now - Corespondents In Conflict. Artist Caroline Jaine is showcasing a collection of oil paintings highlighting reporters from conflict areas around the world:

“I was moved by the journalists I met in Iraq who presented me with decorative business cards describing themselves first and foremost as writers and poets” - Caroline Jaine

War Poets of Now - Correspondents in Conflict will be exhibited at The Frontline Club in Paddington, London, UK from 2 April  2009 until June 2009.

For more information and to see some of the artworks to be exhibited please visit Caroline Jaine.

Audio Active’s Hip Hop Foundation presents BONFIRE NIGHT!

Audio Active are a Brighton based music charity set up in 2000. They face a constant battle to secure funding yet still manage to provide an excellent service for young DJs and MCs in the seaside town and the surrounding areas. Bonfire Night is the brain-child Audio Active co-hort Dizraeli who is at the root of this latest venture which is due top premiere at Brighton’s Pavilion Theatre next Wednesday.

Bonfire Night

Hot off the 2008 Edinburgh Fringe theatre circuit with “The Rebel Cell”, Dizraeli’s youth production - to be premiered on Wednesday 4th March 2009 at Pavilion Theatre, Brighton - is white hot. The night will fuse together poetry, hip hop and theatre under one roof.

Hiphop FoundationThis is youth theatre arguably at it’s best. It sees a group of aspiring rappers (Sam Maryon, Mrisi Makondo-Wills, Jamal Ali, Jordan Stephens), individually, led astray by the sinister spirit, or apparition, of Guy Fawkes, the famous 16th century religious/political revolutionary. The play, delivered entirely in rap, demonstrates the ugly sides of the characters’ personalities, and within the surprisingly short duration (20 minutes), brings their actions to a dramatic climax. The evening will finish with music performances from some of the cast.

Audiences beware. This play is not:

• a social commentary
• a stereotypical take on youth work or urban issues
• the common story of an aspiring urban artist in his journey to ‘making it’

It is:
• theatre
• definitely entertainment

And it might even be:
• consciousness-raising
• and fun

Doors: 18:30 - 20:00
Location: Pavilion Theatre
Town/City: Brighton, United Kingdom

For more information on how to book tickets, please visit the Brighton Pavilion website or call them direct on 01273 709709.

Deviation Session 16 @ The Gramaphone

Come join us for the second Deviation session of 2009. The best midweek session in London returns to Gramaphone, E1. Our last session was massive - Kode 9 smashed it on the decks with one of the most memorable and varied DJ sets ever to be played at the club. Come join us again with for another heavyweight session. British DJ and producer Mark Pritchard aka Harmonic 313 is flying in from his new home in Sydney, Australia, and DJ Haircut of Michigan is flying in from Los Angeles.

Mark Pritchard has pioneered him self as a cutting edge DJ and producer since 1990. Always under a moniker, in the last 18 years he has been involved with a supreme spectrum of production talent, best known for his work as Global communication, Jedi Knights , Troubleman and Harmonic 33 to name but a few. His new alias Harmonic 313 which was created in 2008 has been getting mass attention since it was created and his tracks including “Call To Arms” and “Battlestar” have become big tunes at Deviation. His new album “When Machines exceed human Intelligence” is out on Warp recordings this month and is getting a lot of attention right now. Expect to hear deep bass, digital drums and Detroit style hip-hop influences and a set that will truly test our bespoke sound system.

Haircut has rocked clubs and concerts from Detroit to LA and Toronto to Tokyo. Now a greater Los Angeles resident, the Michigan born singer and DJ has performed with heavyweights such as Eminem, Mos Def, The Black Eyed Peas, De La Soul, Ludacris, The Pharcyde, and Slum Village just to name a few. He is now becoming well known as his alter-ego, Mayer Hawthorne. since Benji B started spinning “Just Ain’t Gonna Work Out” and “When I said Goodbye” on the Deviation radio show last year, Mayer Hawthorne has become one of the most hyped and talked about new artists on the Stones Throw record label. Look out for his LP coming later in 2009.

üdio - Get To Know

We’ve got some amazing nights coming up at The Gramaphone in Shoreditch, so I’d like to be the first to let you all know about this particularly exceptional night coming up… One of those such nights is Üdio, not only purveyors of the finest Cosmic Disco / General Illness, but they’ve got a great blog too - Check it out. There you can find all whats new in their world, but also a mix from the man who’ll be helping them party into the early hours on the 6th March…

After the ROADBLOCK that was Üdio’s 1st Birthday back in January, it would be criminal not to inform you of yet another complete legend gracing the 1’s & 2’s in the basement. A true jacks of all trades, this is something to get seriously excited about!

Trevor Jackson

Trev is well known for his music productions under the guise of Playgroup (and remixes for The Gossip, Franz Ferdinand, The Rapture and more), his now defunct record-label Output (previously home to LCD Soundsystem, Four Tet, Black Strobe and mentalist bird Mu) and also his excellent graphic design work (campaigns for Soulwax, Vice, BMW, Nike and DFA Records amongst others). If you’ve heard his awesome DJ Kicks mix you’ll know how much of a treat we’re in for.

Oh here’s that mix I was talking about - Trevor Jackson’s 80’s Party Mix

Üdio residents Earfworm Jim and the Desi Punk Contingent will of course be in attendance warming things up with all kinds of astrofunk.

£5 on the door - get down early!

THTC Febraury Clothing Sale

I’ve got a lot of time for Gav at THTC. It’s one of those brands I’ve always admired. They’ve been around for a while, slowly building up a quality reputation. It’s nice to see that even with ‘current climate’, brands like THTC, Addict and Ryouki and SS20 all seem to be doing as well as ever. Take a little time to check out their sale, theres some lovely stuff up for grabs.
