Free Range ft. Chase & Status, Kano, Beardyman, N-Type & more…

After breaking all previous box office records for a Friday club night at the Carling Academy Oxford, Free Range bring to you another cutting edge line up exploring the depths of Grime, Dubstep, Drum & Bass and Hip Hop. Whilst other club nights bring you the same generic line ups and brands found city to city, Free Range offers something truly refreshing to the people - for Oxford, with Oxford, from Oxford residents.

Friday 13th February at O2 Academy, Oxford

CHASE & STATUS (RAM Records)
feat. KANO & TAKURA performing Against All Odds

Free Range ft. Chase & Status

Having taken the Drum and Bass and now the Dubstep scene by storm, Chase and Status have reached the top of these UK underground genres. Chase and Status’ debut album more than a lot has placed 20th in the UK dance charts just behind acts such as Portishead and Hot Chip. Chase and Status will be doing a one off special apperence with UK Grime godfather Kano performing his new single with the duo ‘Against all odds’…

Kano has been nominated for 4 MOBO awards and has won the title of best newcomer. His debut album ‘Home Sweet Home’ was a great critical success, well reviewed across the British press, most notably in The Independent and The Observer, two of the UK’s major newspapers. Many artists in the UK and in America have expressed positive views of Kano’s music, including Busta Rhymes, Nas, RZA, Jay-Z, Andre 3000 and Chuck D of Public Enemy.

BEARDYMAN & JFB (Battlejam)
UK Beatbox champion vs UK DMC champion

What do you get when you cross the best beatboxer in the UK with the best DJ? The answer is ‘Battle Jam’. A fast paced improvised battle between mouth and fingers. With a bit of crowd sampling, vj’ing, fish fighting and lots of general crazyness thrown in for good measure.

N-TYPE (Rinse FM)

Having recently been awarded the title of best DJ at the Dubstep awards, N-Type has been in the highest demand smashing clubs from London to Tokyo. Massively respected by all DJs from Electro to Hip Hop, his consistency, tune selection, technical abillity and crowd interaction has led to a lot of clubbers to call him the ‘ANDY C’ of Dubstep.

Our last party was on a Boat (which was abso-bloody-amazing), this time we’re taking it back to the Pub, The wonderful Honey Pot to be exact. Anyone who came to last years shindig will remember highlights such Stumasta casual sitting down mixing, Lager clearing the pub with his crazy “dubstep” beats and Roscizzie getting a huge wedgie, oh the fun we had. Don’t let Christmas pass you by and come all ye who are faithful.

Virus Syndicate (live) + DJ Vadim is back!

Huge night in store for Saturday the 13th of December at one of my favourite East London clubs, Cargo. Soundcrash have brought together Virus Syndicate, DJ Vadim, Pest, Anchorsong, Bobba Fatt(DJ) and Penecillin for their festive shindig. Its free before 8, £6 before 9 and £12 after. Or if you get your tickets in advance its a tenner. Soundcrash bill this as their “phonic round-up of Soundcrash 2008!” and it looks like a blinder.

soundcrashdeclrio2 Virus Syndicate (live) + DJ Vadim is back!

This December’s Soundcrash is a festive treat of epic proportions, with very little to do with Christmas but a lot to do with the music we love, and have endeavoured to bring you in the past 12 months. Think of it as a phonic round-up of Soundcrash 2008!

The hottest act on Mike Paradinas’s imprint Planet Mu, VIRUS SYNDICATE are going to come and knock your socks off. And mine. And any other soul who’s lucky enough to be in the vicinity. After being set to follow Dizzee and Wiley to mainstream success, shunning it in favour of musical integrity, they now have a live show unmatched to date. This is the future of live electronica, dubstep and hip-hop.

Japan has Dj Krush, America has Dj Shadow in the UK we have grandmaster DJ VADIM. Back to form after a frightening recent cancer op, Vadders is back to his rightful place at the top of the Soundcrash line-ups. One of our most revered and talented hip hop and electronic music producers over the last 12 years in addition to the ability to tear up a dancefloor like very few others, Vadim deserves your respect!

Belleruche ‘The Express’ Album Launch @ Vibe Bar

I’ve been expecting a follow up album for some time, and here it is!  After releasing their first album, Turntable Soul Music, Belleruche have managed to keep up the momentum with their new album The Express. I’ve known DJ Modest and Ricky Fabulous for a while,  stretching back to my days at Uni in Brighton.  It’s really good to see their hard work paying off and for them to start getting some of the wider recognition they deserve.

When I heard a few years back that they were coming to play a gig at The Cellar in my then home town Oxford, I had to make the short pilgrimage to see them. I wasn’t disappointed. The 3 of them blend so well, Kathrin deBoer on lead vocals, Modest providing the cuts and Ricky on guitar. It was at that gig I purchased their 7″, Reflection / Bird Mess, absolute freshness.

From humble beginnings, they have now been snapped up by Tru Thoughts and bring you their 2nd album which launches at The Vibe bar on Saturday 11th October.  It’s a measly £4 to get in and tickets are only available on the door, so arrive early.

Positivity Presents Mex @ The Loft, Brighton

mex Positivity Presents Mex @ The Loft, Brighton

MEX BIO
Mex, aka Black Grass, is happy around records. In the mid-nineties he fed his addiction by working in record shops, DJ’ing hip hop and funk breaks at seminal Brighton night Knowledge Of Self, warming up for the likes of OC, Jurassic 5 and Big L.

He soon began compiling breaks albums and battle weapons (including the essential “Ultimate Cakes And Sweets”) leading ultimately to his own Black Grass store (getting high off his own supply!) specialising in hip hop, funk and breaks.

After releasing singles on local label Catskills as the Mexican (achieving NME single of the week for the classic “Spunky Love Fun”), he took Black Grass from being a shop to being a production outfit, releasing the first album “Black Grass” on Catskills Records.

Working both with established vocalists (including Blak Twang & Maylay Sparks),and talented newcomers, Black Grass gained acclaim across the board from both DJs and music fans.

After spending time DJing and touring Australia, Mex recorded the second album “A Hundred Days In One”. Adding even more diversity to the mix than the eponymous album, it delivered enough hooks and beats to light up the dancefloor and get heads nodding in equal amounts, with guests like Jehst, Blu Rum 13, Micall Parknsun on mic duties alongside alt-country sensation Dominique Noiret, with a haunting rendition of Harold Melvin’s “Don’t Leave Me This Way”.

2007 saw Mex complete the third album, “Three”, with guests emcees J-Live, The Good People Rider Shafique and Brighton stalwart Koaste sitting alongside funk sensation Dionne Charles and reggae hotshots Jah Marnyah, Benjammin’ and Ruben Da Silva.

After twenty years behind the turntables in clubs and through his more recent series of mix CDs, Mex has developed a reputation as one of the world’s leading (yet still most under-rated) DJ’s. Influenced by the soundsystems of old (Wild Bunch, Good Times, Soul II Soul) and hip hop legends Jazzy Jeff and Cash Money, he’s admired as both a selector and a man of inimitable style by DJ’s as diverse as Andy Smith and Krafty Kuts.
