Dilla Beats - ORCHESTRA STYLE!

J Dilla

Dilla beats - ORCHESTRA STYLE! This is amazing! Bit of a weird idea, but makes a change from all the usual ‘tripe’ in the classical world! Its classical renditions of classic Dilla if you hadn’t already guessed.

“Fall in love”

“Find a way”

And some footage of the rehearsal before the debut show in LA last week.

Props to Mixmaster Morris for the heads up on this one!

Spotify – A world of music. Instant, simple and free

Spotify – A world of music. Instant, simple and free. That is the mission statement from the latest website to offer free music and joins the ranks of Deezer et all. Basically, you install this player on your computer and then can play any song, ever. Well, at some point you might be able to. Its already got a heap of good shit on there, honestly. Its got an element of social networking to it also where you can share playlists, songs, etc… standard stuff. Apparently its been pretty well-received my the record labels, which is nice.

It is free, but you get an advert every 15 minutes or so. To get rid of this you can sign-up to one of their premium accounts. If that all that makes sence then head over to Spotify - it could be the next big thing. If you need more info check out the press jargon below:

Spotify is a new way to enjoy music. Simply download and install, before you know it you’ll be singing along to the genre, artist or song of your choice. With Spotify you are never far away from the song you want.

There are no restrictions in terms of what you can listen to or when. Forget about the hassle of waiting for files to download and fill up your hard drive before you get round to organising them. Spotify is instant, fun and simple.

Because music is social, Spotify allows you to share songs and playlists with friends, and even work together on collaborative playlists, Friday afternoon in the office might never be the same again! We’re music lovers like everyone else.

We want to connect millions of people with their favorite songs by creating a product that people love to use. We respect creativity and believe in fairly compensating artists for their work. We’ve cleared the rights to use the music you’ll listen to in Spotify.

This is absolutely crazy, really. The internet is a wonderful thing!

Mean Poppa Lean @ Latest Music Bar, Brighton, 13/2/09

The night started off close to the gig in the Three and Ten pub at the Old Steine with a group of work mates and some random friends of friends. This was the night that we had been talking about for weeks and had been telling our work mates about for months.

It had all been building up to this, the pressure was mounting and our reputations were on line. What if our work friends didn’t enjoy Mean Poppa Lean? We would be outed as people who don’t know jack about music!

MPL

After taking our Mean Poppa Lean virgins down a few wrong turns we get to the former Joogleberry, now called The latest Music Bar, there are band members Christian and C-Dogg to welcome us in, how lovely, a band who personally welcomes in excited guests!

Drinks in hand and places set with me actually on stage with the band. We are all ready, ready for the best band I have ever witnessed to come and make us scream the words only they can make us scream: MEAN MEAN, POPPA POPPA!

The gig has got to be the best I have ever seen them perform. Christian was on top form with his singing and really getting the crowd involved, C-Dogg looking good playing his guitar, mostly on the floor, Grills rocking it on drums and Danny strumming away on bass. As per usual, there was a little surprise half way through when a horns section make an appearance with their brass instruments, one trumpet and one trombone bringing out a different side to the Mean Poppa Lean funk machine. Brownie points to anyone that can name them, I forgot!!

Christian MPL

I even got to sing a line to one of my favourite songs “Gemma, what do we eat for breakfast?” And we all know the answer to that, don’t we?

Could the night have been any better? I doubt it! Was I to be outed by my colleagues as a person who don’t know jack about music? Not tonight!

Will Christian, C-Dogg, Grills and Danny Bass hit the big time? Definitely!

Long live Mean Poppa Lean.

Freestyle aka Freestyle Evolution - Don’t Stop the Rock

I know - what a sucker! After seeing the ad a few times and enjoying the eyebrow jiggery pokery, I realised that I actually really liked the tune too.  So through the power of modern technology (Shazam and the interweb), I looked up the tune and vids. At first I thought it was a nu-skool Chromeo-eque creation.

As it turns out the tune, Don’t Sop The Rock by Freestyle aka Freestyle Evolution, is straight out of 1980’s Miami.  The group was founded by a guy with possibly the most pimping name ever,  Tony “Pretty Tony” Butler.  Anyways,  here’s the ad and the tune in it’s entirety. Make sure you enjoy the rest of the tunes of their Myspace!

Maybe I am the marketing man’s dream but I don’t care, that ad’s great and apparently was done with no CGI, just good old fashioned cellotape…and a balloon.

The Blunted forum set to close…

It is with a heavy heart that I must inform you all of the Bunted Forum’s closure. I know you I’m hurting right now but even more so are the thousands of people that posted on there faithfully everyday for the last 7 years (yes it’s been that long & no there haven’t been thousands of you…)

The forum has seen some good times. I recall with a smile on my face the delightful contributions of Triple Truth Ruth & Chris Martin. The insightful posts of Project Cee and his horoscopes, Vixen and her friggin’ Poi posts, Meef and his conspiracy posts and of course who can forget Ineffable’s Fashion Section.

Instead, I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who passed through the forum. It was your involvement and contributions that inspired me and Roscoe to build the Blunted website.

We sincerely hope that you won’t miss the forum too much. For those of you getting withdrawal symptoms, please make your presence felt on the new improved website, whether it be submitting a mix, article, gig review, artist interview or simply dropping a comment, we’d love to know you still care.

In the meantime, get on it. We’ve got Competitions coming out our ears. We have free download mixes updated almost daily. If you haven’t already, download all the BITS! mixes - they’re super hot. Watch this space as we have a very special Blunted gig coming up as well as some rather splendid digital releases, and keep an eye out for an exclusive release of Mean Poppa Lean’s first EP ‘Smash & Grab’.

Big up yourselves!

Reeplay & Melodiq - The Hypnotiq

Reeplay & Melodiq - Hypnotiq

“Reeplay & Melodiq - The Hypnotiq”. If you have copped Reeplay’s “Come With Me” lp, one of our hosted releases, then you’ll already be knowing what’s in store. Now for a bit of background info:

Reeplay & Melodiq are two memebers of Civil Mics Movement (CMM). The two have worked together many times before but this is their first proper foray into forming the collective ‘Hypnotiq’. Hypnotiq is a collection of their collaborations from the past couple of years. The name Hypnotiq derives from the smooth, soulful and relaxing combination of Reeplay’s production and Melodiq’s voice. The albums creation was purely to hypnotise the listener with that “true-school, laid-back Hip Hop sound.”

So there it is. I’ll leave you to make your own assumptions on listening.

  2. Make Room

The competition first started in 2005 in New York, and was such a success its gone worldwide.

Digital Design Tournament 2009 is goin’ big and expanding the tournament this year. The 2D Design competition returns in all its spectacular glory, now joined by new competitions in the battlegrounds of 3D Design and Motion Design. All three competitions will take place in every Cut&Paste city on the 2009 tour, opening the events up to more designers of varied backgrounds and interests than ever before.

The current Call for Competitors is open to anyone interested in competing this year—anyone may compete in any one competition in any one city—all you have to do is submit an entry with a link to an online portfolio. When the Call for Competitors closes, Cut&Paste reviews the entries and, based on the quality of the work, invites the top candidates to Test Rounds. After Test Rounds, a final selection of designers will be made for each competition: eight for 2D Design, four for 3D and Motion Design. All competitors will be announced online.
