Out In The Stix originator, Free Range and Kinetic resident, LAZCRU showing his mixing skills here live on Drum & Bass Arena TV for Week 37 feat The UNCZ. We decided to take a moment to catch up with him and ask him how it came around…..
After winning the Drum & Bass Arena Xmas Comp back in December, The Risky had asked to get me down for a DNBTV slot. The London based studio is where the Break Beat website is run from. Its a very different vibe to mixin’ in any club more like mixin’ in an office with a TV crew in the corner. MCs Mantmast and Burley (Countryman) joined me for my set. I tried to get in as many tunes as I could in the hour with a selection of tunes I am feeling at the moment. Profile was on after me followed by the UNCZ (Ruffstuff/Skibba/Funsta/Harry Shotta). Thought it was a wicked night. Big up to Risky for getting me down.

So yeah, the South East of the UK has been hit with the worse (or best) snow for 18years! I’m one of the few who has made it in today and I took the opportunity to snap some shots of the snow on my way to the studio. So here they are, East London Snow! Photos in no particular order!

New video “Pennies” from Nu Skool Hip Hop hero’s The Cool Kids taken from “When Fish Ride Bicycles” which is coming out soon. Can’t wait for that. Big track, nice little video that has been a while coming. Check out the making of “Pennies” here and the actual video below:
Blunted Presents asked me if I would like to do a little write-up of my Fabric night after they gave me free tickets. How could I say no? So first off, big thanks for the tickets! I am a bit partial to Fabric (as I am a FabricFirst member and think of Fabric as London’s top club) but I have to say this past Friday was the best night I’ve had out in London to date. With our combination of members and free tickets, we breezed past the friendly door staff (more on this later) and into the club without queuing.
Room 2 had an amazing drum’n’bass lineup per usual but I was blown away by the quality of the Room 1 acts. Sweat X, a raving Electrorap duo from South Africa, had the floor going mental right before Toddla T put down an epic Ragga set. Scratch Perverts were on top of their game but Patchwork Pirates had me seizing when they dropped bombs like The Proxy – Raven and Nadastrom – Pussy back to back. See that? I just listed off the entire Room 1 set list and I truly can’t pick a favorite. Being able to rave it up in Room 1 and then walk over to Room 2 and thrash to Grooverider, Chase & Status, Adam F and the like, made the night just perfect.
That’s what makes Fabric such a top-flight club. The acts they bring in are ridiculous which in turn attracts music lovers. The staff there is also on point. Bouncers are never too rude, the smoking area guy (James) is always up for a chat and the clean-up crew will rave it up with you if they have a moment. Some of my friends shy away from Fabric because of the club drugs but if that’s what’s keeping you away, fear not! Fabric is not about drugs it’s about people who love music letting go and having a wicked night. I truly believe everyone should go to Fabric once.
I’ll be back at Fabric for sure…on February 6th and 13th to be exact (check the lineups … how could you not go?!). Keep a lookout for the half-Asian youngster raving hard. That being said thanks for the tickets Blunted Presents and thanks to Fabric for being on top of your game.

A work mate just tipped me about this little piece of kit after we were discussing the KORG Kaoss Pad. The TENORI-ON is electronic musical instrument, designed and created by Japanese artist, Toshio Iwai and Yu Nishibori of the Music and Human Interface Group, Yamaha Center for Advanced Sound Technology. And it rocks. It consists of a screen, held in the hands, of a sixteen by sixteen grid of LED switches, any of which can be activated in a number of ways to create an evolving musical soundscape.
The LED switches are held within a magnesium frame, which has two built-in speakers located on the top of frame, as well as a dial and buttons that control the type of sound and beats per minute produced. There is also an LCD screen on the bottom edge of the frame. Using the connection function, it is possible to play a synchronized session, or to send and receive songs between two of the devices.
The TENORI-ON retails for around 600 quid, if you are unsure of what to buy me for Christmas, make this your priority!
I had no real intention of going out last Saturday night. I was going to be a pussy, switch my phone off and watch Match of The Day instead. However, as is so often the case, it came round to the afternoon and I started feeling frisky. I knew End Of level Baddie had a gig at The Providence at the top of my road. It had been a little while since I’d seen them and also had some mates that I thought would like them too. I made a couple of calls, had a couple of spliffs and a few cans of beer before trekking up the way to check out the gig.
The Providence isn’t somewhere you choose to go for a quiet drink. It’s got a distinctly Wetherspoons feel about it to be honest. Thats the downside. The upside is the sound system in there is absolutely crisp and they have some amazing band nights there, courtesy of Lout Promotions.
On entering the building we paid our £2 entry (a f*cking steal in hindsight) and noticed on the board that headlining the night were a band called Doll and The Kicks. Now, I’m not massively up on Brighton’s indie scene but my mates seemed quite excited by the prospect. Apparently the lead singer is really hot and they do a wicked dub/ska/punk tune which is amazing.
By the time EOLB came on I was in a slightly merrier mood. Their live sets just keep getting better although I was slightly disappointed not to hear Creeps On The Beach.
Then out came the headling band. Dude with a huge afro and a buttoned up chequered shirt on guitar caught my attention…until Doll took to the stage. From the moment she started singing she absolutely owned the stage. To say she has a distinctive voice is an understatement, reminded me a little of Deborah Harrie. They opened with ‘If You Care’ . The track of the set for me was their forthcoming single ‘Roll Up The Red Carpet’ which is being released on the 29th January 2009.
Wicked night.
