Klondike Kids Interview

This is one dope collaboration. Brighton producers Tom Caruana and Dutch Courage, come together to form the Klondike Kids. This project has been on the boil for a while, and I have been fortunate enough to hear snippets along the way. Now the project is finished, I took some time out with the duo to ask them a few questions. It gives a real insight into how the two worked together creating different elements of the tracks, constructing and delivering them together, genius. Be sure to hit play on “Live In The Palace” whilst you read through the interview.

Right first off, I gotta ask, where did the name come from?

D - We chose the name right at the end of making the album, it’s kind of a throw-away name but it’s linked with the 19th century gold rush (the Klondike was an area famous for gold mining). When we met we were into digging for samples for beats and I guess it’s got that digging for gold connotation to it.

Klondike Kids

T - Yeah, Spaghetti Saloon had this style to it that reminded us of a Honky Tonk piano being played in spaghetti western film, our name relates to the image that’s conjured up from that period of history.

What’s the concept behind the album?

D - There isn’t one really apart from the name and it’s imagery but we wanted to make evocative instrumental music, something that was going to be interesting and cinematic.

T - We wanted to make music that didn’t fit in one genre alone, to bring both of our influences into one project.

What is the intention of the album?

T -Since we met in 1998 we shared an interest in making beats, but it was always very much a solo thing to use samples and make beats. When we decided to create some music together we knew it had to be more based around using instruments and playing live.

D - I think we both wanted to write something different from the beats we were making and playing to each other but that also involved some of the more eclectic beat ideas we had.

Who does what?

T - A real mix to be honest. Some tracks were created from an individual basis (Klondike mike was Dutch’s samples he’d put together but with my touches on top) and we wrote some tracks together.

As an overall breakdown: Dutch did; programming, Sax, Flute, Piano, Keyboards, Synth. Me; Drums, programming, samples, Synth, some bits of Keyboard, Percussion and Guitar.

D - We also had the Shofar Horns (3 piece horn section I play in) on a couple of tracks, Joe Sam (Son of Sam) on bass on Live at The Palace, Lou Maggs (Shofar Allstars) guitar on Spaghetti Saloon, plus a kids choir appears on the album as well!

Who would you like to collaborate with on your next project if money were no object?

D - Tom Caruana.

T - Dutch Courage.

I’m currently listening to Spaghetti Saloon – top stuff! Are there plans to make it into a video?

D - No real plans, we did have an idea of that but it didn’t last long. We thought it was the most cinematic track and I suppose it could be a soundtrack for a short film or something like that. Not with us in it though.

What influenced you throughout this project?

T - Various things, all the good music that we had listened to over the years.

D - Definitely David Axelrod.

T - Yeah we were both really into Axelrod.

D - Overlanders is a nod to Fela Kuti. Other influences would be J Dilla, RJD2 & Madlib.

T - MF DOOM and Son of Sam musically; and I acquired a Juno synth that gave the tracks we used it on an electronic influence.

D - Hip Hop, Jazz, Soul, Funk, Breaks, Reggae….all good music really. We are influenced by so much different music aren’t we Tom?

T - We are Dutch.

What else can we expect from the Klondike Kids?

T - Another album in the near future.

D - An album mostly of instruments and live playing with a lot less programming.

T - We’d like to get some vocalists involved. A more song based album. We will be DJ’ing together whilst making the next album and be able to test ideas out in public.

Where can the good people actually download/buy some of this lovely stuff?

T - For the time being we’ve got some tunes to listen on the Klondike Kids Myspace page. and we’ll have CDs available in the near future.

Any plans to do any live shows with it?

T - This album would be quite difficult to recreate live but with our next material we will be conscious of making it work live so that we could perform it that way.

D - We know musicians we would like to get involved with that. I’d definitely enjoy that.

And before I say adios – can you leave us with a profound statement and any shout outs?

D - Keep it simple.

T - John Sam, Joe Sam, Dutch’s dad for the name, Budabeats,

D - Simpson, Daps, Balls Deep, Shofars, Eye United, Legwork, Adam Turner,The Gills.

The project has had a limited release so far far but make sure you keep checking the website as we are soon to do a digital release of the Klondike Kids. I’m certain you won’t be disappointed.

Tom Caruana - The Rough Versions Album

We all know that Tom Caruana is one serious Beat-smith. It’s like he doesn’t sleep. There’s just a relentless flow of quality productions. As well as doing a lot of original work he also lends his skills to the art of remixing. I caught up with him and asked him a few questions about The Rough Versions album which he collated in 2007.

How did the album come about?

I started off by making the MF Doom (Favourite Ladies) & Busta Rhymes remix without thinking I was gonna do a remix album. Then I got hooked on finding accapellas, first from various 12’s of mine or friends, buying from Rarekind, and downloading from the net. I made about 60 remixes over 4 months, and worked more on the ones I liked the most.

What was it that appealed to you so much about making remixes?

I was so into making them cos it was quick and you could get results in minutes and tell if it was gonna work out nice or not. All remixes start by me getting the accapella in time and then building the beat around it. Normally a basic drum pattern and then see where it goes from there, sometime the first idea works and sometimes it takes a few.

OK, cool. So what tracks are your favourites?

My favourites are:

  • Dangerous : was getting into using more keyboards / vst’s when I made this.
  • The Get Down : a more recent one with lots of Juno (Roland Synth)
  • I Go On : I think this sounds like its from Lyte’s early 90’s era.
  • REC Room: well happy how I managed to work the whole of an instrumental version of Girl (The Beatles) over this - un-looped!
  • Audio Visual : made in my lounge with me on drums, guitar, bass, juno - the fun way to make tunes!
  • Change The Beat : love all the sections on this. There were many samples tried, so the ones that made it had to fight to get there.

You must have accumulated a huge number of remixes. What happened to the ones that didn’t make it on to the album?

It would sometimes take a few times to get a remix right, so a lot got made….resulting in the bonus tracks and beats being used for other projects. Grand Agent used about 5 of these beats. I have made an album with Grand Agent called ‘The Ghetto Aint A Place’, it would be good to get a remix album of that too.
I might get into it again at some point but I’m focusing on other stuff at the moment. I’m looking to get other producers to remix tracks for Tea Sea Records to release a ‘non-bootleg’ remix album.

How would you best describe the The Rough Versions?

It’s a bootleg remix album of American rappers. As a fun project that has to be given out free.

Tom Caruana - Welcome Aboard EP

caruanafront Tom Caruana Welcome Aboard EP

Well, looky what we have here…a new EP from the prolific Tom Caruana. He has just recently finished revamping his site Tea Sea Records, which really is worth checking. The amount of quality this man puts out is astounding. To give you a flavour, some of the stuff he’s doing at the moment include work with, Grand Agent, Dutch Courage, Teej, Elemental and the plethora of collabo’s that is Bombadeal.

With the launch of the new site comes the release of this special little 9 track EP ‘Welcome Aboard’. It seems that Caruana’s music is crossing borders, as this project is released in conjunction with Hungarian label Buda Beats. He said of the release “they (Buda Beats) asked to put out a little free EP I made out of tracks from my album ‘Bric A Brac’ and I said I’d rather make something exclusive”.

The thing is he never seems to do anything average, as you can tell when you listen to this EP, it reaks quality. He could have given them some half-baked tired old beats, instead he concocted a theme, “I had wanted to do some stuff about being on the ocean, then I found a vinyl given out to people on the QE2….so I made some skits and threaded them through the vocal tracks. This created the theme of the EP…”

It seems this accommodating label shared Caruana’s vision and went about creating the EP artwork in keeping with the sea-faring theme.

Tom Caruana - Welcome Aboard Back

The link up came after someone at the label latched onto his Breakin Bread release ‘Splice of Life’. Ever the gentleman, he explains “I’m lucky to be asked to do something like this it taps into a completely new audience for me… They’ve asked me to go there to play but I’m gonna be in Edinburgh in August so wont make it over there but hopefully they’ll ask me again”.
