Indecision Interview:

So you finally got round to a BITS! Mix - what can we expect?

A few personal favourites from the past and from the last few months. Bit of hiphop, bit of soul, bit of latin a few randoms in there too like Creedence, haha. It’s a lot of stuff that if I had the choice I’d play in a set without fear of reprisal from a dancefloor…

You’re not worried about what people think are you?

A lot of the time yes, not about me… just the music.

But as the DJ, you are the music no?

In a sense, but I don’t want to be all ‘YOU WILL DANCE TO MY RECORDS’ like some people do, I won’t play something just for me, but at the same time I wouldn’t play something just because someone wants to hear it. It’s good just to feel the flavour of who you’ve got in front of you and feed off them, and maybe tease something in just to test them I suppose. I guess that’s why I try and keep a wide variety of music around me.

What tunes are your personal favourites on the mix?

Oh that’s easy….Charmaine Brunette ‘Am I the Same Girl?’ and Ellen Mcillwaine ‘Jimmy Jean’

Is there something you want to tell us??

The Charmaine Brunette track is a cover of a Barbara Acklin track I had for ages in my box but never realised, Aidan Skylarkin’ pointed it out to me and I fell in love with it. Then I heard this slightly more soulful version from the 80’s and its just incredible. It’s always a set ender now.

You have ‘Get up, get on it’ by James Brown on there. I know you are a big JB fan - do you miss him?

Of course I do… but you know, he didn’t do anything to directly influence me towards the end of his life, but he changed SO much, popular music today would be completely different. The Beatles, Elvis, Buddy Holly the list goes on - none of them did anything like what James did to music. And not just music, the guy changed black politics in the US and probably the world with one song. I don’t think there’s anyone who could lay claim to changing the world in the way he did. And the concept was so simple.

I guess his presence as a human being will be missed, and I don’t think there will ever be anyone like him again. But ‘Get Up’ just is everything the man was about - getting up, doing something that means something, not necessarily to others, but so long as it means something to you, that’s what counts. I’ve got mad love for the guy.

Fair play, so now summarise your mix in 4 words…

Party in your pants.

Lastly what does Blunted mean to you?

My introduction to like minded people for the 1st time.

And finally, shout outs fella?

Yeah loads - Blunted Presents, the whole ASM/Third Culture crew, Headcount crew, Breakin Bread crew, Skylarkin’ crew in all its forms and Denizen Boogie.

Reeplay BITS! Interview:

Why did you want to do a BITS mix?

I heard everyone else’s, all of them sick, they all seem to be peoples personal tastes which I like, shows something about them as a person if you know what I mean. So, I wanted to do one, to show people where I’m comin’ from.

Ok cool - so describe your mix, what can people expect?

Well its mostly soul music, and by that I mean music for the soul, sounds a bit cliché but that’s the best way to describe it. As for specifics, golden era Hip Hop from the modern day, old/new funk, and a ‘lil bit of Jazz.

Are there any particular tracks that stand out for or have particular relevance to you?

Yeah definitely they all do, more then others. 60% of the tunes you hear are from people in the Civil Mics family or affiliated with them, others are tasters from people I talk to from across the globe who have kindly let me show real music is still around.

Aside from Civil Mics, have you got any other associates in on this?

Yeah there’s this ASM joint, well not totally ASM as its produced by Scott but features Green and FP. There’s also a track me and Melodiq have done for our album, theres a joint by Pat D and Lady Paradox on there, my man Mentalist let me sneak a joint on from his free mixtape. There’s a joint from this dope producer from Swindon I speak to & know as Forty Immortal, he did a remix for some joints on Rawkus Records and got chosen. I cant forget Presto and Blacc plague (Writes Of passage).

You got some good collabo’s on the go definitely! Last year you released ‘Come With Me’ - what’s the feedback on it?

Yeah good, I sent it to a couple local labels, they said it was the best stuff they have heard for a while. I sent it 2 Mark B, he said the beats were dope but the lyrical content was a bit too slow moving for him. The feedback I have got from people is very positive, I even met a Reeplay groupie the other day - she said “I loved you, and listen to your album everyday” - I felt dappah.

Haha, nice work. So how many units did you mange to shift?

Umm… cough cough. Lets just say I’m on my way to getting my platinum tooth.

I’m just intrigued what with the release of LMFLH Vol.2. What barriers did you come up against? Why do you think it didn’t shift more?

I don’t think enough people have heard it (LMFLH), I feel I rushed my beat (Proper Dosage) a little, I just really wanted a joint on there, and I know my man ‘Evo’ was dead keen to hook up with me.

Would you be interested re-releasing ‘Come With Me’ as a digital release free for download?

Yeaaah, I wanna get that shit heard get hype for my new album.

New album eh? Give us some details!

I’m not gonna say a date or anything cos its still a concept, although I do have a couple finished songs already. Its gonna be doper / shorter & clearer. Not a tiny EP but a reasonable sized plate, unlike that all you can eat buffet ‘Come With Me‘!

Title? Collabs?

Don’t have a title yet, collaborated with many people from CMM (Civil Mics Movement), hopefully more cats from the boogie down Ox, maybe some established people, but I cant say any names yet.

What format will the release be?

It’s gonna be available on CD/Vinyl/Digital - I’m hoping to get some help from A Bridge Too Far Records.

Nice, Pat D certainly has his head screwed on - a good man to know.

Mos definitely, the world will see a lot more from that one.

Right cool - you’ve whetted peoples appetite with this BITS! mix which is dope - where can people hear you’re other stuff?

If your an artist looking for a beat then check myspace - www.myspace.com/reeplay and there will always be info about what I’m doing/plan to do on that page just below the tracks.

You ever considered virb.com?

Nah – but I’m gonna sign up now, haha.

Do you ever play out, or want to?

Yeah I wanna keep playin’ until people have no energy and collapse, haha.

So when you next playing out?

Yeah well hopefully I’m going to organise some bits and bobs here in Southampton. MC Presto should be coming in the summer and we are going to try and do a show, since we’ve got like 30 tracks together and never got round to slappin’ out an album concept.

Nice one – you have any shout outs?

Yes yes - thank you for everybody who let me use there music on the Mix, shouts to K-Nite and Mentalist, Loose Threads family. Shouts to Pat D, Lady P, ASM, Fade, Green T and FP. Shouts to Teef, Seun, Connexion, all of CMM, Fortyi, W.O.P, Melodiq and everyone else for listenin’

Finally - what does Blunted presents mean to you?

Family, good times, good music, good nights, and good atmosphere.
