Pandemonium Jones - Splendid Moments 2008 Mix

As we move into 2009 I thought I’d try and compile a couple of “Best of” mixes that I’ve seen on the interweb. The first is stolen from the Sound Verite’ Blog; “Splendid Moments 2008″ is the work of Pandemonium Jones of the DJ duo Cap & Jones. The mix jumps around a few genres and offers a freakin’ awesome re-cap on what’s been hot this year, from the Philly resident. Its pretty damn nice and I’m ashamed to say it has introduced me to a heap of tracks that I’d missed…

Splendid Moments

Pandemonium Jones has this to say on the the mix:

My friend Khris asked me to contribute a mix of some of my favorite songs for the year to be shared via his blog, Rock The Dub, “the least jiggy and the most no frills” digital thought outpost on the internetto, and I was only too happy to oblige as he is an old and dear chum and he rocks a fine dub. The mix is called “Splendid Moments” and I think it lives up to the title. Many artists and genres of music are conspicuously absent, so it does not reflect my Overall Favorite Songs Hands Down, but it contains a lot of songs that dropped my jaw this year. I’m very pleased with the results and I hope you like it, too.

As usual its all free, if you have spotted any other “Best of 2008″ mixes that deserve attention then drop them in the comments below.

Blunted Presents - BITS! Vol.18 ft. Sam Webster

BITS! is back! At last we break our 6 month drought to bring you an extra special collection of hand-picked tracks from our very good friend Sam Webster (aka Sloth). I can tell you this mix has been a very long time coming, we’ve been badgering Mr Webster for yonks, but its well worth the wait.

Featuring a whole heap of different genre’s it doesn’t try to conform in any way, much like its creator! Artists include Sage Francis, Atmosphere, Gangstarr to The Strokes, Interpol, These New Puritans to Subtle, LCD Soundsystem, Aphex Twin and Arcade Fire.

If you don’t know Sam Webster he makes super-fresh beats, some of which can be found on his myspace. If the artwork looks a bit sketchy is just the compression of the site, its embedded in the .mp3 along with the track-list so it’ll look super crisp on your iPod.

texture DJs - Quantum Of Disco

We’ve been spoiling you for tunes and mixes of late. I’m particularly feeling the Dub MD presents Hiphop Renatus mix, the tracklisting is sickening! Anyways, to keep the pace I have something a little special for you all. This time those chaps known as textureDJs provide with aptly titled ‘Quantum Of Disco’ mix. You might think that because they took their influence from the Bond films, this could be a cheesey attempt to ‘cash in’ on the most recent film’s popularity. Indeed one half of textureDJ’s, Cynan admits “yeah, its jumping on the James Bond bandwagon, but I’ve had this great ‘Basie Does Bond’ LP, a £1 charity shop score, sitting on the shelf for a while just begging to be dropped in as an intro. I love some dusty old jazz, and I think that comes through in a couple of tunes in this mix”.

I have to agree, each tune has been picked for it’s artistic and musical merit, all mixed seamlessly.  You got jazz, breaks, soul, disco….basically all the beats they make you want to shake your ass pon the the dancefloor. Nuggets to look out for include The Bamboo’s featuring UK hiphop legend TY, ‘Can’t Help Myself’, ill live funk and breaks with TY’s awesome flow pushing this tune through. I asked Cynan which tune stood out for him on the mix, “there’s one tune in there I fell in love with one Xmas as an eight year old in ‘84, it was a big fluorescent 12″ maxi single, with a ghost on one side, and this amazing THING on the B side called a DUB VERSION without the vocals and this serious electric BEAT that drops in half way through… talk about texture. I’m sure you can figure out which one that is!” Indeed I can, haha.
